Rehabilitation of an existing single-family home in a rural area

The renovation of the OC35 house represents a balance between respect for vernacular architecture and the pursuit of modern, luminous livability. Located in a privileged rural setting, this project transforms an old stone building into a contemporary retreat where wood, glass, and masonry dialogue in perfect harmony.

An Architectural Concept Based on Dialogue

The starting point for this rural renovation project was the restoration of the original stone walls. The architectural strategy focused on dividing the program into two distinct volumes articulated through a central courtyard—a modern reinterpretation of the traditional patio.

This layout not only guarantees privacy for the resting areas but also creates a protected outdoor space that acts as the heart of the home, allowing nature and architecture to merge into a single element.

Materiality: Between Tradition and the Avant-Garde

The aesthetic of House OC35 is defined by the honest use of materials:

  • Natural Stone: The original masonry walls remain the protagonists, providing thermal inertia and an incomparable organic texture.
  • Exposed Wood: Inside, the gabled roof with wooden beams provides warmth and a sense of vertical spaciousness.
  • Glass and Steel: Large openings and a continuous skylight beneath the roofline break the heaviness of the walls, visually lifting the roof and bathing the spaces in natural light.

Minimalist Interior Design and Landscape Connection

The interior design focuses on warm minimalism. Open-plan spaces, such as the living-dining room and the integrated kitchen, eliminate visual barriers to enhance views of the valley.

The living room’s large picture window functions as a “living painting,” framing the landscape and dissolving the boundaries between interior and exterior. Every detail has been designed to create an atmosphere of serenity and thermal comfort.

Sustainability and Respect for the Environment

This project is an example of sustainable architecture. The reuse of the existing structure, combined with modern insulation solutions and an orientation that maximizes solar radiation, makes this renovation a model of efficiency in the rural environment.
